Airflow Testing and Balancing

holding flow hood

The majority of our projects include some degree of air balancing. Whether the project includes constant volume fans, variable volume terminal units, or something more complex, we have the experience and knowledge to setup the system properly.

For certain applications, our technicians will use a laptop to control the equipment being tested. Our technicians have training in a wide range of program types from manufacturers such as Trane, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Carrier, etc. Having the equipment and skills necessary to communicate with the building automation system allows our technicians to complete the many tasks without the need for controls-related assistance.

The instrumentation employed on our projects is top of the line and either meets or exceeds NEBB standards and requirements. Our equipment is maintained and calibrated with NIST traceable certificates.

Specific equipment used during air testing and balancing includes, but is not limited to:rotating vane anemometer

  • Shortridge Electronic Micromanometers / AirData Multimeters
    • These ADM’s, as they are known, are used as hand-held portable meters for air velocity, pressure, and temperature measurement.
  • Shortridge FlowHoods
    • Paired with the Shortridge ADM, the flowhood provides real-time accurate airflow measurement in cubic feet per minute (CFM). The flowhood has numerous hood configurations giving Research Air Flo technicians the flexibility to work on various types of air distribution devices.
  • Alnor Rotating Vane Anemometers (RVA)
    • These RVA’s are light weight and robust and provide accurate and reliable velocity readings every time.
  • Digital Psychrometers (various brands)
    • Provide in-duct wet bulb and dry bulb temperature measurements along with relative humidity data.
